The Professional Trainings are a combination of the development of high level skills, knowledge and presence, with special attention to learning about oneself. We believe that living into greater self-understanding, working through or letting go of what is not essential, or simply being with what is, will support us as we come to know who we are. Therefore all programs are oriented to both personal growth as well as professional development. This approach to living and professional life is expressed in greater well being, happiness, creativity and better service to all beings. All programs are offered in an atmosphere of support and safety to help facilitate exploration, greater Awareness, and the expansion of the experience of Joy.
The Pacific Center for Awareness and Bodywork is within the Pacific College of Kauai. The College and the Center are licensed by the Hawaii State Department of Education and the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. The Programs offered are Approved and Licensed by Hawaii Department of Education and many programs are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, (NCBTMB) as a continuing education, and Approved and Certified by the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners.
Where We Teach
Our home base is on Kauai in the beautiful islands of Hawaii. The islands are wonderful. Often the word paradise is associated with Hawaii - the Pacific Ocean, whales and dolphins, dramatic mountains, many waterfalls, people from all over the world living and visiting here, beautiful flowers and a multitude of fruits. The air is clean and sweet. Often just breathing truly feels like taking in nourishment. The ocean is crystalline clear in endless shades of blue. Within a few minutes from the classroom on Kauai, there are many gorgeous beaches with rivers flowing in to the ocean. Many times, when you get to the beach, you can make the first footprints of the day, and some days have the whole beach to yourself. Surfers come from all over the world for it’s perfect conditions. Basically Hawaii provides a wonderfully nourishing environment to learn, grow, and relax. Our classrooms are selected and/or designed to provide privacy, quiet, safety, and supportive settings for the work we will do together. Sometimes class is indoors and occasionally at the nearby beach, in nature.
One of the favorite gathering places of students is an area under the trees at a secluded beach.
We could go on for quite a while about Hawaii. You can check some of the pictures we have included at the bottom of the various web pages to see where we offer classes, and the surrounding ‘neighborhood’.
In addition to Kauai, we teach in many cities around the country.
About The Directors
We started teaching in the mid 70’s, mostly workshops and or private sessions and consultations. In the 1980’s and early 1990’s we owned and directed larger schools in Florida and St. Louis. As many as 200 students a day attended classes at the Florida School of Massage/Florida Institute of Natural Health which we started in September of 1980. While we enjoyed that very much, the time came to live simpler lives, while continuing this work. We now have smaller classes and a more relaxed, healthy and mellow lifestyle. Each program usually has between 16 and 20 students. Classes provide a level of excellence and effectiveness while being taught in a gentle, relaxed and supportive environment, where safety, acceptance and encouragement are the norm.
Having been involved in teaching Bodywork and Awareness practices for as long as we have, has helped us to come to ways of teaching that we believe are more effective than ever. What once took one year or more, can now be taught in six months in most cases.
Being present when people open to inner feelings and beliefs, greater understanding, well being, peace and love, is the primary reason we keep participating in this work. So many times, the classes are filled with the laughter that accompanies the ‘aha’s’ of life or the ‘profound silence’ that comes when someone has a breakthrough or ‘resting into their own being’. We have been nourished and inspired by the students who have shared these programs with us over the years. Many people have repeated the same programs over and over just to be a part of the energy that is created and to use it as a way to go deeper into their own self-exploration. We look forward to more of the same, and discovering in what new ways we can grow, heal, and evolve.

LEE JOSEPH, M.S., C.H., R.M.T., is the Director/Founder of the Pacific Center for Awareness & Bodywork on Kauai, Hawaii where he provides full certification courses and intensives in Bodywork, Presence Centered Awareness Therapy and other modalities. (He has also helped start and develop nine other Health Institutes on the mainland, including the Florida School of Massage/Florida Institute of Natural Health.) Over the last 30 years he has been teaching, consulting, and providing private sessions in many locations in the U.S. Lee integrates Awareness Oriented Bodywork with Psychology and Meditative Awareness Practices. He loves transpersonal therapies and the wisdom traditions of both East and West. He has traveled half way around the world for the opportunity to study and learn from many diverse sources. His primary interests are the immediate experience of presence and love, and helping others to experience their own truth to live happier lives.
CAROLE MADSEN, M.Ed., L.M.T. is Founder and former Director of the Healing Arts Center, massage school and clinic in St. Louis, MO. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance, a Masters Degree in Counseling, and post-graduate work in Dance Therapy (Naropa Institute), and Gestalt Therapy. She is a Rebirthing Breathwork Therapist, trained with Sondra Ray and the LRT, a Movement Therapist, Hypnotherapist, Reiki practitioner, and Childbirth Doula. She has been a licensed Massage Therapist and movement specialist since 1976. Her work both with individuals and groups, is designed to help increase awareness on all levels through the use of movement, touch and loving, emotional support. Carole is a mom, grandmom, avid organic gardner, hula dancer and lover of life. Through her gentle presence, she brings beauty, grace, and peace to all her classes.
CRISTOFER RUBINI, L.M.T., has been teaching bodywork techniques and awareness practices at PCAB for the past 3 years. After attending U.C. Berkeley he came to study Awareness Oriented Physical Therapies with Lee and Carole here at the Pacific Center for Awareness and Bodywork. He has also studied at the Rolf Institute in Boulder, CO to further increase his understanding and training in Structural Integration. He has also been studying Vipassana meditation techniques through the Burmese lineage, along with many other mindful practices resting more into presence. He brings his passion for the subjects being shared with a loving presence, helping to create an excited and full learning atmosphere.
There are many other teachers that join the program for their areas of interest and expertise.
